Abstract

The paper focuses on swinger couples—committed couples who consensually engage in extra-relational sex for recreational purposes. The study aims to understand the experiences of such couples, especially how they transition into and maintain marital satisfaction in the swinging lifestyle. The paper is based on 32 semi-structured interviews with swingers (16 husband–wife dyads).

Introduction

The paper starts by discussing how monogamy is the cultural norm in Western societies, but non-monogamy is becoming increasingly common. It highlights that extramarital affairs can have negative consequences, but consensual extramarital activities like swinging may actually benefit some marriages.

Literature Review

The paper reviews existing literature on Consensual Non-Monogamous (CNM) relationships like polyamory and swinging. It discusses how swingers differ from polyamorists in that they focus more on sexual experiences rather than emotional bonds. The paper also talks about the stigma associated with CNM relationships and how swingers often defy these stereotypes.

Methodology

The study used a grounded theory approach and recruited swinger couples through online communities and a swinger convention. Couples were interviewed separately to understand their individual experiences.

Results

The study found that rules and boundaries are crucial for couples transitioning into the swinging lifestyle. These rules are established initially and can be amended as couples gain more experience. The study also found that effective communication, both verbal and non-verbal, was paramount to the couples' experiences in swinging.

Key Takeaways

  • Swinging can be a part of a committed relationship and may even enhance marital satisfaction for some couples.
  • Effective communication is crucial for maintaining boundaries and ensuring mutual satisfaction.
  • The study provides a grounded theory model for understanding the experiences of swinger couples.
