Swinging is distinct from other forms of non-monogamy in it's emphasis on romantic exclusivity. ENM is too broad to capture this facet of swinging. Some forms of ENM include romantic exclusivity and some forms don't. Previously, when women were second class citizens, the term "monogamous" was nearly synonymous with sexual fidelity. More recently, society has broadened it's awareness of monogamy to include both sexual and romantic monogamy. "Swingers" remain invested in romantic monogamy while pursuing sexual adventures. Meeting up with someone for a sexual romp can be perfectly acceptable. However, sending flowers, chocolates, and poetry to someone new may put your relationship in jeopardy. As an analogy. let's look at the term extracurricular. Extracurricular activities are not a negation of your curricular activities. They are meant to enhance your curricular activities. Yes, you can over-commit to too many extra-curricular actives and thus detract from your curricular activities. But generally, they should be an enhancement to your curricular goals. Let's apply this same model to monogamy. Extramonogamous sexual activities are not a negation of, or a detraction from, your romantic monogamy. If done right, it's an enhancement to your romantic exclusivity. The term ExtraMonogamus emphasizes commitment--the emotional/romantic commitment. If it were widely adopted, it would also be helpful signal to Open Relationship Folks and Poly to folks to immediately let them know that your available for sexual adventures but not romantic attachments. Lastly, the broader society values Committed Relationships. When this broader society catches wind that your relationship is not monogamous (sexually monogamous) they assume that your relationship is either weak or failing. Exramonogamous shifts the focus to your shared commitment and exclusivity which is likely to be more accepted by the larger society. "Well, their kinky, but still seem quite committed." "If they are not sexually monogamous, why do they call themselves extramonogamous?" "Oh, that's because, despite their sexual adventures, they remain romantically exclusive. If you are used to playing with experienced swingers, it can be easy to take for granted that everyone understands what consent means in a swinger environment. But new people often show up with misconceptions. Sometimes, new people may feel they are discarding the old rules without really considering what replaces them. The host owns/runs the space. Everyone looks to the host for cues about appropriate behavior. Consider the play space as LOW EXPECTATIONS and HIGH POSSIBILITIES. Nobody owes anyone else anything when it comes to sex. 1. Just because someone is wearing something incredibly sexy (or even completely nude) and chatting with you, that doesn't permit you to touch them without asking. If you ever have the slightest doubt about whether your touch is welcome, ASK! 2. Don't put people on the spot. Express your interest. Make yourself available. Don't press for a right-now answer. Women especially do not like to be put on the spot because direct NOs have often felt unsafe to them. 3. BE GRACIOUS. Everyone is here for a different reason, and everyone is entitled to their desires and preferences. None of us like rejection. People who handle rejection gracefully will be invited back again. 4. Don't invite yourself into ongoing play. Often, if you see two or three couples involved in a group play session, they all know each other. They made arrangements to play together. If they left the door wide open, that might be considered an invitation to watch. If someone from the group invites you to join, then go for it. Otherwise, have fun watching from a respectful distance. If you are unsure, asking if you can watch is always polite and respectful. 5. Stealthing: Removing your condom in the middle of sex without your partner's permission is WRONG and will get you immediately booted from the party. Depending on your location, you may find sexual assault charges filed against you as this exposes people to the possibility of pregnancy or STIs You cannot go wrong by explaining some simple rules and ensuring everyone is on the same page.
